Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,

In 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated became the first Greek lettered organization established by African American women. Our roots date back to Howard University, Washington D.C., where the idea of our formation was conceived by our visionary, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle. She viewed the sorority as an instrument for enriching social and intellectual aspects of college life by providing mental stimulation through interaction with friends. Through the years, our beloved sorority has expanded on our tradition and continues to strive for high scholastic and ethical standards, promoting friendship and unity amongst college women, alleviating problems concerning girls and women, maintaining a progressive in college life and continuing to serve all mankind. We are so very thankful for our 20 pearls for creating such an illustrious sorority!
